Supported development

Physical activity can be the beginning of something bigger.

The Supported Development Framework helps people take manageable steps through activity, trusted relationships and practical support. Funded or referred programmes may operate separately, with different eligibility and referral arrangements.

The idea

Start with the person. Choose the support. Review what is changing. Plan the next step.
  1. 01

    Stage 1

    Assess

Understand the person’s starting point, preferences and goals.

  2. 02

    Stage 2

    Engage

Create safety, trust and achievable early participation.

  3. 03

    Stage 3

    Develop

Choose a useful blend of physical activity, mentoring, wellbeing and practical support.

  4. 04

    Stage 4

    Review

Measure change, listen and adapt the plan.

  5. 05

    Stage 5

    Progress

Connect growing confidence to a clear next step.

  6. 06

    Stage 6

    Sustain

Help the person continue after the initial support ends.

Choosing the support

Build the support around the person.

The framework can draw on gym activity, functional fitness, yoga, non-contact boxing, racquet activity, mentoring, wellbeing support and employability guidance. The mix depends on what the person is working towards.

What progress may look like

Progress can take more than one form.

01

Personal foundations

  • Wellbeing

Feeling better able to manage routine, stress and daily life.

  • Confidence

Being more willing to try, participate and enter new settings.

02

Participation and connection

  • Connection

Feeling less isolated and more part of a community.

  • Activity

    Moving more regularly and independently.

03

Learning and progression

  • Learning engagement

Feeling ready to take another learning step.

  • Employability

Building routine, communication, reliability and work-readiness.

  • Progression

Moving into sustained activity, volunteering, learning or work.

  • Sustainability

Maintaining a positive next step after the programme ends.

Separate arrangements

Understand who is responsible before taking part.

01VK Gym
VK provides a working gym where people can build confidence, meet coaches and members, and find ways to keep active after a supported programme.
02Funded or referred programmes
Any separate programme must explain its delivery team, eligibility, referral process and support arrangements before a participant agrees to proceed.
